‘Resident Evil 6′: Milla Jovovich Reaffirms Summer 2015 Filming Start Date

resident evil 6 final chapter release date milla jovovich Resident Evil 6: Milla Jovovich Reaffirms Summer 2015 Filming Start Date
Resident Evil movie franchise screenwriter Paul W.S. Anderson – who’s also helmed most of the films in the sci-fi/horror video game-inspired series – had once planned to begin shooting his sixth and final installment (working title: Resident Evil: The Final Chapter) in 2013, then changed that to 2014. However, production got put on hold a third time, understandably, after Anderson’s wife and his Resident Evil movie franchise star, Milla Jovovich, became pregnant.
Jovovich broke the news to fans last year, while also announcing that principal photography on The Final Chapter would instead be getting underway in Summer 2015… most likely, anyway. However, she’s now provided a fresh update on her own personal health, while re-affirming that things are proceeding as previously expected on the next Resident Evil movie.
Here’s the relevant excerpt from Jovovich’s post to her official Facebook page:
I’m really proud of myself for not gaining the same amount of weight that I did with our first child (75 lbs.) because I have to be ready to start filming “Resident Evil- The Final Chapter” in August of this year and I will also be nursing an infant simultaneously (get ready wardrobe department for Alice’s new “easy mama access” costume;)) so I don’t want to be on any extreme diets to get ready to go back to “action hero” mode!
No additional cast and/or plot details have been reported for The Final Chapter, other than it will finish the story of Jovovich’s Alice. Anderson, back when he was at 2012′s San Diego Comic-Con to promote Resident Evil: Retribution, said that Retributionis “the beginning of the end” to the tale he wants to tell in the Resident Eviluniverse. Even by then, though, Jovovich was acknowledging that the Resident Evilmovie brand will live on (e.g. a reboot), after she and Anderson have stepped away from it.

The Final Chapter, assuming it’s not pushed back again, could arrive by September in 2016, as did the last two installments (Afterlife and Retribution) did in 2010 and 2012, respectively.
When it does, most of the fans who have stuck it out with Anderson and his pop action movie take on the Resident Evil property over the years (through the good and bad alike) will, no doubt, turn out for this sixth movie… if only to see how this whole thing gets wrapped up.
We’ll bring you more information on Resident Evil 6 (a.k.a. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter) when we have it.

‘The Revenant’ Images: DiCaprio Wants Revenge in ‘Birdman’ Director’s New Film

Filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu has, of late, been collecting awards left and right for his work on the showbiz-skewing comedy/drama Birdman… and there’s a real chance he’ll be earning similar acclaim come this time next year. That’s because the writer/director is also busily shooting his next project, a gritty western/revenge drama called The Revenant – a film that, like everything Iñárritu does, deserves to be labeled “ambitious.”
The Revenant is based on the 2003 book by Michael Punke and was inspired by the true story of the 19th century frontiersman Hugh Glass (whose story has inspired other literary/cinematic works in the past). Iñárritu’s movie is headlined by Leonardo DiCaprio as Mr. Glass, a fur trapper who gets mauled by a bear in unsettled American terrain, only to then wind up being robbed and left for dead by his companions. However, Glass survives all this and sets out to seek vengeance against the men who betrayed him, thereafter.
Birdman is unusual in that Iñárritu and cinematographer Emanuel Lubezki (Gravity) filmed the movie in such a fashion that (with a little editing for assistance) it appears to have been shot as one single, uninterrupted take. This approach is, in essence, a means of blending the style of cinema and theater, appropriately enough, for a story about a Hollywood (ex-)star trying to put on a hit play – a narrative that, on paper, doesn’t read as being a huge challenge to create onscreen.
Similarly, The Revenant sounds like a pretty straight-forward revenge tale with a historical setting… only, Iñárritu and Lubezki are shooting the movie with nothing but natural light, in remote and undeveloped regions of Calgary where they can only film for a few hours a day – hence, production has been extended to April. Iñárritu, when he spoke to EW, admitted that this shooting technique is one that could just as easily blow up in his face as it could work exceptionally well.
“It’s a very experimental thing that we’re doing here…I’m now addicted to doing things that can fail horribly or maybe that can give us a surprise. We are all into it.”
You can check out an especially grizzled-looking DiCaprio in The Revenant (as well as the actor and Iñárritu on set), below.

The filmmaking style on The Revenant does make sense, with regard to the story being told… but, as indicated before, if it’s not done just right, the movie could just as well turn out to be a murky and unpleasant-looking mess, rather than a visually-lush piece of cinema verité. Similarly, the adapted screenplay by Iñárritu and Mark L. Smith (The Hole) could easily come off as a thinly-sketched drama about savage human behavior in the untamed American west, as it could play out as a rich character study.
… But, at this stage in his career, Iñárritu’s very much earned the benefit of the doubt. And, with a cast that includes Domhnall Gleeson (Unbroken), Will Poulter (The Maze Runner), and Tom Hardy (who may’ve passed on Suicide Squad because this film is taking longer than expected to finish shooting), The Revenant now sounds all the more interesting for it.
The Revenant will begin an awards season-qualifying limited theatrical release on December 25th, 2015; it expands nation-wide in the U.S. on January 8th, 2016.

‘The Raid 3′ May Not Arrive Until 2018 or 2019

the raid 3 release date The Raid 3 May Not Arrive Until 2018 or 2019
You may consider Gareth Huw Evans’ The Raid 2: Berandal an instant action classic; alternately, you may feel that Evans’ ambition got in the way of the sequel’s ante-upping action sequences. (Read our own Kofi Outlaw’s review here.) But if you fall on one side of the fence or the other, you’re probably still excited at the prospect of Evans returning to Jakarta’s bloodstained criminal underworld for another round ofhyper-violence.
After all, the Welsh-born filmmaker has already built expectations for The Raid 3s (subtitle pending) eventual release; that film will, per Evans’ own words, begin a couple of hours before The Raid 2: Berandal‘s insanely brutal climax. But though the director already has both a concept and a starting point in mind, he isn’t rushing to put pen to paper on a new Raid picture just yet.
In point of fact, if you’re eagerly anticipating the next installment in the’ Indonesian crime saga, it seems like you’re going to have to wait a while – a long, long while. In a recent statement broadcast via Twitter, Evans put The Raid 3 on his timeline somewhere between 2018 and 2019, noting concurrently that he hasn’t begun writing the film’s script, either. So fans of The Raid: Redemption and The Raid 2: Berandal are going to have to find their over the top action fixes elsewhere in the interim.

The Raid 2 Hammer Girl Baseball Bat Man The Raid 3 May Not Arrive Until 2018 or 2019
Bummer. Kind of, anyways; even if you found The Raid 2: Berandal‘s operatic narrative, bursting with hints of The Godfather and Infernal Affairs, to be a bit much, the film’s set pieces, which are so inventively crazy that it’s a wonder nobody died while filming them, more than make up for it. And yet there’s something to be said for not rushing toward production for the sake of churning out product.
So maybe the length of stay separating The Raid 3 from The Raid 2: Berandal will ultimately benefit Evans, his stars (several of whom are lending their skills to J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens), and the entire series as a whole. It’s worth pointing out that Evans’ Tweet means that The Raid 3 is still a subject fresh in his mind even as he busies himself with other projects, though what those might be is unknown. (He was, for a while, working on The Night Comes For Us with Indonesian director and VHS 2 collaborator Timo Tjahjanto, but that picture has transitioned into graphic novel form.)
The Raid 2 Iko Uwais The Raid 3 May Not Arrive Until 2018 or 2019
In the interest of disclosure, the parent Tweet in the quoted Twitter thread suggests that Evans is currently scoping out places to wreak some form of havoc or another. Take that as you will. If anything, it’s proof that Evans can’t sit still for too long before seeking things to blow up, but most importantly it means that he’s working on something – just not The Raid 3.
Evans, in fairness, did say about a year ago that The Raid 3 wouldn’t be on his radar immediately post-The Raid 2. That means an even greater waiting period for fans today. But if he needs that gulf between both films to make The Raid 3 the best display of bone-shattering carnage possible, so be it.
We’ll keep you up to date on details regarding The Raid 3 as they become available.

‘Suicide Squad’ Rumor: Ben Affleck’s Batman to Appear, Will Set Up Solo Film

Batman vs Deadshot and Suicide Squad Suicide Squad Rumor: Ben Afflecks Batman to Appear, Will Set Up Solo Film
[WARNING: This post contains possible MAJOR SPOILERS for Suicide Squadand Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.]

While Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is Warner Bros.’ next big foray into DC superhero filmmaking, it’s not the only superhero film on the docket – David Ayer’sSuicide Squad is already gearing up for production.
Considering the film boasts a pretty stellar cast – Will Smith as Deadshot, Jai Courtney as Captain BoomerangMargot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as The Joker, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and potentially Jake Gyllenhaal as Rick Flagg (in place of the recently departed Tom Hardy) – fan interest for it is only going to increase as the film nears its production start date.
Especially if recent reports are to be believed. We already wrote about the rumors regarding The Joker’s role in the film (think Hannibal Lecter in Silence of the Lambs, only with clown makeup on). Now, a new rumor – which seems to support the aforementioned Joker info – indicates that Ben Affleck will appear in something of a cameo in the film.
According to Forbes, Batman won’t just get a mention (or appear in video footage, as previous rumors claimed) – he’ll appear “in-story” at the end of the film after The Joker escapes Arkham Asylum. Apparently, this will more or less kick-start the plot ofBatman’s own standalone film, which will be heavily influenced by the Joker section of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns comic book.
The Joker Alex Ross Art Suicide Squad Rumor: Ben Afflecks Batman to Appear, Will Set Up Solo Film
From Forbes’ Mark Hughes:
This would set up the Joker as a possible/likely antagonist in the solo Batman movie that’s planned in the next few years, and which I’ve heard will take some inspiration from Frank Miller’s comic book series ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ – the third issue of which is a story about Batman facing off against an escaped Joker. I’m also told that Gotham City Police Commissioner Ellen Yindel (who replaces James Gordon during the comic book story) is planned for inclusion in the film.
That last bit about Commissioner Ellen Yindel makes sense based on what we’ve heard previously about this new DC Cinematic Universe. If you recall, James Gordon is supposedly dead by the the time Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice begins. Our own Kofi Outlaw even speculated that Yindel could fill the void left by Gordon.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if the Batman solo film were to be inspired byThe Dark Knight Returns, considering its predecessor – Batman v Superman – has already been confirmed to have used TDKR as a big source of inspiration. How exactly the comic book will inspire the film (if this rumor is even true) is obviously yet unknown, but it’s doubtful they’ll be killing off The Joker this soon after introducing him, and that’s what that Joker story is most famous for.

Regardless, having Batman show up at the very end of Suicide Squad could be an excellent means of teasing the future of the DC Cinematic Universe. Whether or not it comes before or after the credits, it would basically function in the same way the post-credits Marvel scenes have functioned, which themselves functioned in the same wayBatman Begins‘ Joker playing card scene functioned at the end of that film.
What say you? Do you want to see Batman show up in Suicide Squad? Would you like to see a Batman solo film featuring The Joker as a main antagonist? Drop us a line in the comments.

‘Star Wars’: Tatiana Maslany & Rooney Mara Testing for Gareth Edwards’ Spinoff

Star Wars Tatiana Maslany and Rooney Mara Testing for Gareth Edwards Spinoff Star Wars: Tatiana Maslany & Rooney Mara Testing for Gareth Edwards Spinoff
Star Wars: The Force Awakens will release in theaters this December, and following it will be new Star Wars films every year thereafter – with films possibly already planned through 2020. With only three more films planned in the originalStar Wars saga (for now), during the years in between Episodes VI-IX, Disney and Lucasfilm plan to release spinoff or standalone films set within the Star Wars universe. These films could range from a Boba Fett-led bounty adventure to a film focusing on young Han Solo or Yoda.
What we know so far about these standalone Star Wars films is that Gareth Edwards(Godzilla) and Josh Trank (Fantastic Four) are each directing one. Gary Whitta wrote a draft of a script for Edwards’ film, but has since left the project. The latest rumors suggest Simon Kinberg may pick up screenwriting duties for this first spinoff, due in theaters December 2016.
Whitta’s script was reportedly a heist about stealing the plans for the Death Star by a group of bounty hunters. But don’t immediately assume it’ll star Fett, as those same rumors said the film’s protaganist would be introduced in The Force Awakens, just obviously as much older character.
Whether or not that’s still the case is unclear, but THR has learned Edwards’ standalone Star Wars films will soon begin testing actresses for its female lead. Specifically, they’re testing Orphan’s Black‘s Tatiana Maslany and Rooney Mara (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo), though Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) is also on the shortlist.
Felicity Jones in The Theory of Everything Star Wars: Tatiana Maslany & Rooney Mara Testing for Gareth Edwards Spinoff
Felicity Jones in ‘The Theory of Everything.’
Naturally, since we don’t actually know what any of these standalone Star Wars films are about, many will jump to the conclusion that the role being cast is a young Princess Leia.  And really it isn’t outside the realm of possibility if the film is indeed about stealing the plans for the Death Star, keeping in mind it’s Leia who is eventually in possession of the stolen plans. Also, it’s worth noting these actresses do share some likenesses with a young Carrie Fisher.
Then again, the female lead for Edwards’ Star Wars film may well be a woman bounty hunter or an entirely different sort of role. In fact, perhaps the spinoff story has absolutely nothing to do with a heist to steal the Death Star plans. As of right now, we simply know too little.
Who would you guess Tatiana Maslany, Rooney Mara or Felicity Jones could be testing for in Gareth Edwards’ Star Wars film? A young Leia or (hopefully) a brand new female character for the Star Wars universe? Let us hear what you think in the comments below!
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in U.S. theaters on December 18th, 2015, followed by Gareth Edwards’ spinoff on December 16th, 2016.

‘The Interview’ Will Stream on Netflix Beginning January 24

The Interview Netflix streaming date revealed The Interview Will Stream on Netflix Beginning January 24
Last month, the film industry was taken aback by the unprecedented controversy following Sony’s comedy film, The Interview, which infamously stars James Franco and Seth Rogen as entertainment journalists assigned to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. The touchy subject matter had apparently upset the “Guardians of Peace”, a group that was allegedly behind the extremely-damaging hacks of Sony’s servers; and they threatened to attack any theater that showed the film during its previously scheduled Christmas 2014 release.
In response, some of America’s largest theater chains canceled screenings, which probably influenced Sony’s decision to stop the release altogether. After several film professionals and fans expressed outrage over the move, the studio backtracked and put the film out in a limited theatrical release, as well as distributing it on various VOD streaming services, such as iTunes and Google Play. Now, Netflix is getting in on the deal.
Variety is reporting that The Interview will begin streaming on Netflix in the U.S. and Canada on January 24, which is a month after the film was originally released. While Netflix tried to get the rights back in December, Sony most likely wanted to maximize the revenue that VOD would generate before putting it on Netflix; and that decision has arguably paid off in some capacity. As of this writing, the 5.8 million rentals of the film have given the studio over $40 million, a nice addition to the $6 million it made from 581 theatrical locations.
In the weeks leading up to its premiere, many moviegoers expressed a strong desire to see The Interview in the name of protecting free speech, but since the film has been out for a few weeks, that stance has cooled off a bit. Also, now that many have seen that the film isn’t exactly a heralded piece of biting satire (read our review), all the controversy surrounding it seems somewhat ridiculous in retrospect. All of these factors could lead to the VOD rentals becoming less and less profitable for the studio, leading them putting it on Netflix for their millions of customers.
the interview 2014 major theater chains dropped The Interview Will Stream on Netflix Beginning January 24
The one question that will haunt Sony executives for a while is whether or not this was all worth it. It’s true that the estimated $46 million The Interview has made to date is considerably more than if they had just buried the film, but Sony is far from being in the black when it comes to all of the movie’s costs. The production budget for the film was $44 million, and an extra $30 million was spent on a highly-visible marketing campaign that was heating up during December. That conservatively puts the studio at $28 million in the red.
If Sony went through on the nationwide theatrical release (around 3,800 screens), analysts claim The Interview would have made about $25 million over a holiday weekend, and most likely would have been able to parlay its domination of media headlines into a hefty total when it was all said and done. Most definitely it would’ve made more than the $46 million it’s taken in - not to mention, had a chance at being a profitable endeavor instead of where we are now. Is this what Sony should have done, from a business perspective?
Seth Rogen and James Franco The Interview The Interview Will Stream on Netflix Beginning January 24
The Interview was just a bad situation for a studio in a worse one that had no real win-win outcome. It’s true that patriotism prevailed and we got to see the movie, but Sony still lost a considerable amount of money on something the studio had hoped would be a holiday season tentpole; and from a certain point of view, canceling the release was the right move. Sony does stand to make some additional coin off of the impending Blu-ray release in February, but now that Netflix customers can see the movie for nothing, that won’t help with clearing costs either.
The Interview is now available on various streaming services.]

‘American Sniper’: Details on Steven Spielberg’s Version of the Movie Revealed

January 2015 Preview American Sniper American Sniper: Details on Steven Spielbergs Version of the Movie Revealed
[This post contains SPOILERS for American Sniper.]
-
Warner Bros. clearly anticipated that American Sniper – the film adaptation of the late Chris Kyle’s memoir – could be a contender in the 2015 awards season, once Clint Eastwood agreed to direct the film. However, even the studio couldn’t have predicted that the movie would rack up multiple Oscar nominations (including for Best Picture) – before opening to more than $100 million at the U.S. box office over the four-day MLK holiday frame, when it expanded nation-wide.
The overall critical reception for Sniper has been a positive one but, given the current political climate, it probably comes as little surprise to learn that the film’s success has now ignited a larger debate about not just its accuracy, but also the political statement the movie makes… assuming you think it makes one at all. For those reasons, it’s all the more interesting to learn what the movie’s original director, Steven Spielberg, had in mind with his planned rendition of Kyle’s life story.
THR has published an article (hat tip to both /Film and From Director Steven Spielberg) that offers a brief history of the American Sniper movie; starting in 2010 with screenwriter Jason Hall’s first meeting with the real-life Kyle: the ex-Navy SEAL credited with the most sniper kills in U.S. military history. Hall’s script, as presented through Eastwood’s movie, spans Kyle’s life from his time as a child – being taught life lessons by his father Wayne (Ben Reed) – to his choice to join the military as a grown man (Bradley Cooper), and undergo multiple tours of Iraq during the 2000s, after he’d met and started a family with his wife, Taya (Sienna Miller).
Iraqi Sniper in American Sniper American Sniper: Details on Steven Spielbergs Version of the Movie Revealed
The second and third act of Eastwood’s American Sniper (and, in turn, Hall’s script) are framed by Kyle’s ongoing battle with an Iraqi sniper known as Mustafa (Sammy Shiek) – an expert marksman and ex-Olympic athlete, whose life outside war otherwise remains a mystery, even after he is killed in battle by Kyle. It turns out the treatment of the Mustafa character was perhaps the main difference between Spielberg and Eastwood’s versions of Kyle’s experiences.
Here is the relevant excerpt, from the THR article:
For a few months after Kyle’s funeral, it looked as if Steven Spielberg would be directing American Sniper. Spielberg had read Kyle’s book and Hall’s screenplay and was willing to commit to it as his next movie, with DreamWorks co-producing. But he had some ideas of his own. For one thing, he wanted to focus more on the “enemy sniper” in the script — the insurgent sharpshooter who was trying to track down and kill Kyle. “He was a mirror of Chris on the other side,” Hall explains of Spielberg’s vision. “It was a psychological duel as much as a physical duel. It was buried in my script, but Steven helped bring it out.”
As Spielberg added more and more ideas to the story, the page count continued to grow, bloating to 160. Warner Bros.’ budget for the film, though, remained a slender $60 million. Ultimately, Spielberg felt he couldn’t bring his vision of the story to the screen for that amount of money and dropped out of the project. Within a week, Warner Bros. president Greg Silverman, one of the three executives who run the studio, asked domestic distribution chief Dan Fellman to call Clint Eastwood.
american sniper bradley cooper1 American Sniper: Details on Steven Spielbergs Version of the Movie Revealed
One of the common criticisms that’s been made of American Sniper (it’s also an issue raised in our 4-star review of the film) is that it works better as a wartime-set action/thriller than it does as an insightful biopic about the real Chris Kyle. As our Kofi Outlaw put it, by the time Eastwood’s film begins to draw to a close (and Kyle calls him wife in the heat of battle to tell her he’s ready to truly come home at last), “we’ve simply witnessed a journey, with no larger statement about what the journey means, thematically, or how/why we should relate.”
Spielberg’s plan to beef up the Mustafa character – so that he might serve as a proper reflection of Kyle and his own personal beliefs – might’ve corrected this problem, while at the same time providing a more human face for the Iraqi population in the story than Eastwood’s version manages to offer (an issue that’s sparked more than a little in the way of heated debate about the film). This, in turn, might have given American Sniper a more cohesive thematic backbone, as a whole, and improved the film purely as a work of cinematic storytelling… the discussion about how accurate (or not) the whole thing is, aside.
Bradley Cooper in American Sniper American Sniper: Details on Steven Spielbergs Version of the Movie Revealed
However, it’s not clear if Spielberg’s version of American Sniper would’ve devoted more time to examining Kyle’s life after he returned home from his final tour overseas – and then, began helping other veterans with PTSD, resulting in his premature death at the hands of one such recovering soldier. That part of Hall’s shooting script (and, in turn, Eastwood’s movie) has also been criticized for playing out too much like a rushed epilogue, when it should’ve been just as fully explored as the other key developments in Kyle’s life depicted in his big screen biography.
Eastwood’s version of American Sniper is, of course, the one that actually made it to the big screen; and thus, the version that people are going to continue to debate and/or dissect not just now, but for years to come. Still, as always, it’s interesting to think about what might’ve been… and how (if at all) the general response would’ve differed, by comparison.
American Sniper is now playing in U.S. theaters.
