‘Masters of the Universe’ Script Finished by ‘Kick-Ass 2′ Director Jeff Wadlow

masters universe movie script Masters of the Universe Script Finished by Kick Ass 2 Director Jeff Wadlow
Masters of the Universe, a big screen reboot of Mattel’s He-Man/Masters of the Universe multi-media property, is one of those projects that seems to be continually in development, but has yet to progress beyond the script development stage. Today we can confirm that a fresh Masters of the Universe screenplay draft has been finished by writer/director Jeff Wadlow (Kick-Ass 2); whether or not the project at last takes the next step forward, remains to be seen.
The Masters of the Universe franchise (including its various comics/cartoon spinoffs) revolves around the fight between forces of good (He-Man/She-Ra) and evil (Skeletor) in the fantasy world of Eternia. It was a popular geek property of the 1980s, similar to brands such as Transformers and G.I. Joe; in fact, G.I. Joe: Retaliation director John Chu was once set to reboot the Masters of the Universe live-action film iteration.
Wadlow joined the project as a screenwriter after Chu stepped down as director; hence, the Masters of the Universe script has gone through a handful of writers’ hands at this stage. That list includes Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean 1-4), Richard Wenk (The Equalizer), and writing duo Alex Litvak and Michael Finch (Predators).
Those combined film credits indicates that Masters of the Universe is, in fact, meant to be a fun action/fantasy offering that’s nonetheless more straight-faced than camp-tastic. It remains to be seen if all of these scribes get credited for their contributions, but their names are included on the Masters of the Universe script cover that Columbia Pictures Senior Vice President DeVon Franklin posted via his Twitter account (see below).

Wadlow is reported to be in the running to direct Masters of the Universe, assuming that Columbia Pictures heads approve of his completed script draft. The writer/director also finished a script for an X-Force movie that may or may not ever get filmed – now that 20th Century Fox is moving forward with X-Men films like Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse in 2016 instead – but Wadlow might have more luck with his He-Man movie screenplay.

Kick-Ass 2 was neither as commercially successful nor nearly as critically acclaimed as its predecessor, but Wadlow did show potential as a pop action filmmaker on the comic book adaptation (read our review for more insight on that). 1980s-born IP revivals like Masters of the Universe don’t exactly have a strong quality record, but it’s possible that someone like Wadlow could bring a fresher perspective to the proceedings… or, failing that, at least a competent approach to updating He-Man.
However, before he gets a shot, Wadlow’s Masters of the Universe script has to go over with studio heads well enough to earn a green-light; otherwise, it’s back to the drawing board (… again).
We’ll keep you updated on Masters of the Universe as more information is made available.

‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’ Season 10 Trailer

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia remains one of those dark-horse comedy shows that endures even if the fanbase isn’t all that massive.
About to enter its 10th season (the second on spinoff network FXX), Sunny has garnered zero major awards, very few nominations, yet it’s now fully syndicated in reruns (Comedy Central) and the show’s influence on the cultural zeitgeist can be seen just about anywhere there are people dressing up in green body suits (Green Man!) or screaming “Wildcard!” just before they do something crazy.
When last we saw the gang from Paddy’s Pub (Dennis, Mac, Charlie, Sweet Dee and Frank), they had attempted to honor Thanksgiving tradition by ‘settling their beefs’ with the various supporting characters whom they run across (and afoul of) again and again over the course of 9 seasons.

Perhaps why it’s fitting that the season 10 trailer would feature so many of those side characters in this season 10 trailer  - especially since some of them (Rickety Cricket, Bill Ponderosa) were last seen trying desperately to escape from Mac and Dennis’ burning apartment as the gang sealed them in. Then again, this is a sitcom, not a serialized show, so seeing characters like The Waitress and The Attorney back as well can only be expected. If there is anything Sunny has mastered, it’s returning to the well for some fresh gags.

Finally, this is probably the most elaborate trailer for a season of Sunny that we’ve seen yet – which should be a testament to the fact that this gang of showrunners – Rob McElhenney (Mac), Glenn Howerton (Dennis) and Charlie Day (Charlie) – have been pretty savvy about turning a profit from their little show that keeps keepin’ on.

‘Ant-Man’ Trailer Releasing January 6th During ‘Agent Carter’ Premiere

At a glance, it’s easy to see how Marvel’s Ant-Man could seem a little too similar to that of the story of Iron Man where A man changes his questionable ways and suits up to become a hero (an eventual Avenger), while a power-hungry, business-savvy enemy (Corey Stoll’s Darren Cross) suits up in a slightly better suit for a final confrontation, all driven by tech and genius inventors.
But it’s thankfully not that simple and there’s a lot more to Ant-Man which made Marvel and its bosses decide to not only greenlight the project based on the non-A-list character and place it in a position to serve as the conclusion to another chapter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, paving the way for Civil War (Captain America 3) to kickstart  Phase 3 in 2016.
Ant-Man is a heist movie that – as a first for the MCU – explores superhero families and mentor-mentee relationships. While the present day story is about Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) passing the Ant-Man mantle (and the actual suit) over to a master thief (Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang) for the greater good, it’s also going to explore the past, using several familiar returning characters (Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter & John Slattery’s Howard Stark) to fit the original Ant-Man in the history books of S.H.I.E.L.D..
It’s an interesting and smart way to still have Hank Pym and wife Janet Van Dyne (Wasp) be founding members of what eventually becomes The Avengers just as they are in Marvel Comics. The timing of Ant-Man after The Avengers: Age of Ultronhits theaters and after the Agent Carter miniseries airs on ABC paves an interesting road for Ant-Man to follow and that’s why first official Ant-Man teaser trailer will air next week, Tuesday, January 6th, during the two-hour premiere of Agent Carter. A week later, on January 12th, comes the second full trailer for The Avengers: Age of Ultron.
Official Ant-Man movie synopsis
The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man” when master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats.
We must applaud the tiny-format gimmick of this announcement video. It’s nice to see Marvel playing up the fun side of a property based on character(s) who can shrink in size.
Marvel’s “Ant-Man” stars Paul Rudd as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man, Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne, Corey Stoll as Darren Cross aka Yellowjacket, Bobby Cannavale as Paxton, Michael Peña as Luis, Judy Greer as Maggie, Tip “Ti” Harris as Dave, David Dastmalchian as Kurt, Wood Harris as Gale, Jordi Mollà as Castillo and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym.
Peyton Reed directs Marvel’s “Ant-Man” with Kevin Feige producing and Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Victoria Alonso, Michael Grillo, Edgar Wright and Stan Lee serving as executive producers.
The two-hour series premiere of Agent Carter airs Tuesday, January 6 beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron releases in theaters on May 1 2015, followed by Ant-Man on July 17 2015, Captain America: Civil War on May 6 2016, Doctor Strange on November 4 2016, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 on May 5 2017, Thor: Ragnarok on July 28, 2017, Black Panther on November 3 2017, Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 on May 4 2018, Captain Marvel on July 6 2018, Inhumans on November 2 2018 and Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2 on May 3 2019.

Neill Blomkamp Reveals Unofficial ‘Alien’ Project Concept Art

neil blomkamp director alien movie Neill Blomkamp Reveals Unofficial Alien Project Concept Art
Both Ridley Scott and Neill Blomkamp have new science fiction movies scheduled to arrive in 2015, in the shapes of The Martian and Chappie, respectively. It’s possible that this year, Scott will set to work on the sequel to Prometheus, his (not really an)Alien film prequel starring Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender. However, in an unexpected twist, it turns out that Blomkamp has been working on an Alien project of his own.
The project in question – referred to as Alien Xeno in one of the pieces of concept art that Blomkamp posted online – is very unofficial. The District 9 and Elysium filmmaker has made it clear that this was something he put together for fun, and not in any way something that 20th Century Fox commissioned him to work on; as he worded it, the whole thing “was a mental stroll into the world Ridley Scott created.”
Depicted below, we have artwork featuring Sigourney Weaver in Ellen Ripley mode, as well as imagery of a Xenomorph Queen, Weyland-Yutani Corporate locations, and Cpl. Dwayne Hicks – who was played by Michael Biehn in Aliens (1986), before he reprised the character again for the 2013 video game Aliens: Colonial Marines.
For more, have a look through the filmmaker’s Alien movie artwork – which, according to a post on his (unverified) Twitter account“[Fox] didn’t really even know I was working on” – that Blomkamp has made available for viewing online, below (you can check out additional images on his Instagram account).

Blomkamp’s artwork also depicts what appears to be a dilapidated Engineer spaceship (from Prometheus), as well as Ridley wearing a rather different type of “Space Jockey” helmet than the one previously worn by Engineers. It’s an intriguing blend of not just Blomkamp’s rendition of the visual style originally pioneered by Alien in 1979 (and the subsequent movie sequels and video game spinoffs), but also the filmmaker’s vision for how to properly combine Alien and Prometheus elements together.
Nowadays it seems that Blomkamp, as a filmmaker, is more interested in building his own sandboxes to play in, rather than working on pre-established properties (after the experience he had trying to make a Halo movie). Still, were Fox to give the go-ahead for Alien 5 – and/or were Ridley Scott to pass on directing Prometheus 2 – then thisAlien Xeno art suggests Blomkamp might well be interested.
We’ll keep you posted on all future Alien and/or Prometheus-related news.

‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ Trailer #2 Arrives on January 12th

We’re currently eagerly awaiting the recently-classified first trailer for Ant-Man, which is one of two Marvel Studios movie releases arriving in 2015. Meanwhile, this year’s other new film addition to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, screenwriter/director Joss Whedon’s The Avengers: Age of Ultron, will be getting a second trailer (U.S. trailer, that is) in less than two weeks, as is revealed in the above video.
Ant-Man, the superhero/heist thriller from director Peyton Reed (Bring It OnYes Man), is on the verge of beginning its proper marketing blitz; we should find out very soon (maybe tomorrow) if the first trailer will debut with the Agent Carter series premiere, as is rumored. UPDATE: Sure enough, today we received confirmation that the Ant-Man trailer will debut with Agent Carter, during the two-hour TV show event on ABC on January 6th, 2015.
The new U.S. trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron will arriving on January 12th this month, during the 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship that will air on ESPN, starting at 8:30 p.m. ET. Presumably, the preview will drop online soon thereafter, unless Marvel does what Universal did with the Jurassic World trailer back in November and unveils Age of Ultron trailer #2 online before its small screen debut.
The first Age of Ultron trailer focused on introducing the eponymous AI robot-turned megalomaniacal machine (portrayed by James Spader), while also teasing the much-hyped Hulk/Hulkbuster fight, as well as various dramatic moments in Whedon’sAvengers sequel. Thus, it stands to reason that this second trailer will instead better highlight the general story (while maybe providing a first look at Vision in action), but without giving away too many details on the process.
avengers age ultron trailer 2 premiere date Avengers: Age of Ultron Trailer #2 Arrives on January 12th [Updated]
We now know a little more about how Ultron and Vision (J.A.R.V.I.S. voice actor Paul Bettany) enter the equation in Age of Ultron, thanks to some recently-unveiled promo art for the film. What remains a mystery is how these pieces fit together with all the other pieces (Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, Bruce Banner’s struggle, etc.) that make up the puzzle that is the Avengers sequel.
… And thankfully, the next trailer shouldn’t reveal too much about all that; just enough to keep everyone pumped, but still somewhat in the dark about everything that will be going down in Whedon’s Empire Strikes Back of superhero movie sequels” - which is what the film is shaping up to be, in terms of its darker plot developments.
Be sure and check back here on Screen Rant for the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer #2 premiere online!

‘Batman V Superman’ Visual Effects Guru Teases Epic Action Sequence

As we enter 2015, we’re now a little over 14 months away from Zack Snyder’s hotly-anticipated Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, as hard as that may be to believe. The director recently wrapped up principle photography on the film and is now into a lengthy post-production phase. Given all the super-powered characters appearing in the movie, it’s easy to see why his team needs over a year to complete the project.
Man of Steel, perhaps to its detriment, certainly didn’t shortchange on the number of action sequences, as Snyder delivered three big battles that stood out (Krypton, Smallville, Metropolis) and continuously upped the stakes. The collateral damage that was caused by some of these showdowns may become an integral plot point in the sequel, but that doesn’t mean Snyder is going to tone down his set pieces.
While speaking with Collider, visual effects guru Joe Letteri (who has worked on a number of Hollywood tentpoles) opened up on what he’s working on for Batman V Superman. When asked how the sequence compared to the opening Krypton segment of Man of Steel, Letteri gave a tease that should whet the appetites of fans (skip to the 9:25 mark of the video above):
“I can’t really give anything away, but it is a standalone sequence. And I think you will be able to pick it out when you do see it.”
So far, the only officially released footage from the film is the sizzle reel that San Diego Comic-Con 2014 attendees got to see. With its tease of a fight between the two titular characters, it certainly will be easy to “pick out” for fans. However, Leterri noted that his sequence is different from the one that was shown at Comic-Con, which will cause viewers to speculate about what the team has in store.
Given that Wonder Woman will be making her cinematic debut in the film, a distinct possibility could be a scene that involves the three heroes teaming up against a common foe during the finale. The legendary DC Trinity coming together on film for the first time is certainly one aspect of Dawn of Justice audiences will be most looking forward to, and augmenting that moment by doing something extra special will make it even more of a spectacle (like this clip from The Avengers).
batman v superman action scenes Batman V Superman Visual Effects Guru Teases Epic Action Sequence
Letteri specifically saying “standalone” will also raise some questions, as the nature of the word’s definition would imply that it is a self-contained sequence that has little-to-no impact on the overall plot (like a James Bond cold open). After all, Krypton in Man of Steel could be considered standalone, so perhaps Letteri is working on something Superman-centric to illustrate how Kal-El has settled into his role as a protector of the people. There is a rumored sequence where Lois Lane requires a save from Superman in the Middle East, so Letteri could be describing that.
Regardless, with Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and maybe even Aquaman all getting some screen time in Batman V Superman, there will be no shortage of awe-inspiring visuals and potentially epic battle scenes to be had. Perhaps soon we’ll get to see a teaser that provides hints of what this all might entail.
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice will be in theaters March 25, 2016.

2014 Movie Box Office Review: ‘Guardians’, ‘LEGO’, & Summer Slumps

2014 box office bets 2014 Movie Box Office Review: Guardians, LEGO, & Summer Slumps
NOTE: For the purposes of this article, we are mainly focusing on the domestic box office numbers. All totals are as of December 29, 2014.
2014 made a lot of headlines for being one of the worst box office years in recent memory, but the films released in the past 12 months still posted some solid numbers. At the time of this writing, the 681 films released have cumulatively made $10.2 billion, domestically. That’s the lowest the domestic box office has been since 2011, but it’s still an indication that trekking to the theater is still a favorite pastime for the public.
Last year, we broke down some noteworthy box office developments and examined how they might impact the film industry moving forward. As we await the bevy of major tentpoles and intriguing auteur projects that will grace the screens in 2015, it’s time to take a look back at what we said with our dollars in 2014 and explore what effect they’ll have on future projects.

Guardians of the Box Office

Guardians of the Galaxy Team Roster Silhouette 2014 Movie Box Office Review: Guardians, LEGO, & Summer Slumps
Entering the year as one of the riskiest box office bets, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy ended up becoming a worldwide phenomenon that captured the zeitgeist in a way few other blockbusters did this year. Despite being based on a comic few had even heard of, and featuring an untested leading man, James Gunn’s entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe became one of the studio’s most lucrative offerings, scoring $332.7 million in the States (the only movie to cross that milestone this summer) and out-grossing established franchises like Planet of the Apes and Transformers.
As Star-Lord and Rocket Raccoon became household names, other studios took notice. It’s no small coincidence that shortly after Guardians broke August box office records, Warner Bros. secured release dates for future DC Entertainment projects that would go on to become their Justice League shared universe. Fox was also quick to capitalize on the popularity of Guardians’ irreverent humor by finally green-lightingthe Deadpool film. Superheroes have been the thing for a while, but it seems as ifThe Avengers was only the tip of the iceberg. Executives are looking deep into their library of characters knowing that as long as it’s good, audiences will show up.
Meet The Guardians of the Galaxy 2014 Movie Box Office Review: Guardians, LEGO, & Summer Slumps
And that’s what made Guardians a landmark occasion for the comic book genre as a whole. At one point confined to more mainstream titles like Batman or Spider-Man, the impressive haul of Groot and friends gave studios the freedom to blow this thing open and get crazy with the movies they make. Marvel’s Phase 3 will include otherworldly flicks like Inhumans and Captain Marvel. WB is moving forth on their star-studdedSuicide Squad adaptation. If you thought we were nearing the end of the Age of Superheroes, Chris Pratt was there to tell you that you were wrong. We’re all hooked on a feeling.

Summer Slumps

Optimus Prime Grimlock Transformers Age of Extinction 2014 Movie Box Office Review: Guardians, LEGO, & Summer Slumps
In summer 2013, there were a number of straight-up box office bombs, but the blow of such disasters was stymied by the performances of smashes like Iron Man 3 andDespicable Me 2. While there were flops this year, the blockbuster season was mainly characterized by a number of high-profile tentpoles seeing huge decreases after their anticipated opening weekends.
One of the things we mention in our weekly box office predictions is that major releases usually see a noticeable drop-off after the hype has died down, but even then they typically have strong enough legs to hold on to the top spot for consecutive weeks. Starting with the usual summer movie season kickoff date (first weekend of May), and running through the first week of August, there were only two movies that repeated, compared to four in 2013.
amazing spider man 3 2014 Movie Box Office Review: Guardians, LEGO, & Summer Slumps
This summer, six of the weekend champions saw a decrease in excess of 60 percent during their second weekend, whereas only three from last summer suffered that drop. That’s an illustration that the summer of 2014 featured films that didn’t have strong legs. But in a time when business should be booming, why did the numbers suffer so much?
For starters, a few of 2014’s tentpoles (Amazing Spider-Man 2Godzilla) proved to be divisive amongst audiences, and that mixed word-of-mouth can hurt box office prospects during a period where there are several releases competing for attention. There were also some instances where franchise fatigue seemed to be setting in, particularly Transformers: Age of Extinction, which scored the lowest domestic totals in the series ($245.4 million). Comparatively speaking, a number of the “event” movie franchises (Avengers) sat on the sideline this summer, but it’s still surprising to see only one release make more than $300 million.
What can studios do to ensure maximum profitability? Our next point may have some answers…

“Offseason” Blockbusters

lego movie sequel director 2014 Movie Box Office Review: Guardians, LEGO, & Summer Slumps
Ever since Jaws became the first film to cross the $100 million mark during its record-breaking run in 1975, audiences have always associated “blockbusters” with summertime. May to July is usually seen as the busiest time for moviegoing, but in 2014, a number of the year’s biggest hits were released during atypical months and seasons.
The LEGO Movie bucked the trend of February arrivals being poor by earning critical acclaim, which certainly helped it gross $257.7 million (the year’s most successful animation). Marvel gave us Captain America: The Winter Soldier in April and took advantage of the lesser competition to dominate the charts for a record-breaking month and $259.7 million total. Even Guardians (which technically was a summer movie), came out during the less-lucrative time of August  - as opposed to hanging with the big boys in June and July.
Captain America The Winter Soldier Spoilers 2014 Movie Box Office Review: Guardians, LEGO, & Summer Slumps
Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige said prior to the release of Winter Soldier that if you put out a good movie, people will show up to see it no matter what time of year it is; a statement that proved true in 2014. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that studios will be spreading the wealth around to cover all 12 months. This can mainly be seen in WB’s shared Justice League universe slate, with a number of projects arriving in March, April, and August to avoid the cannibalization of the Hollywood tentpole (instead of the established summer or holiday blockbuster seasons), which should help them turn a larger profit.

Families: The Key Demographic?

Kermit Fozzie Animal Walter Muppets Most Wanted 2014 Movie Box Office Review: Guardians, LEGO, & Summer Slumps
One of the laws of predicting the box office is that you never underestimate a film targeted at families. It’s easy to see why, since parents will be purchasing tickets for themselves and their offspring, which leads to higher numbers when it’s all said and done. 2014 saw its fair share of hit programming for this demographic (LEGO Movie,Big Hero 6), but a number of the films that were looking to be a smash came up short.
Muppets Most Wanted should have been able to capitalize on the newfound popularity for the brand following 2011′s The Muppets ($88.6 million), but the sequel couldn’t come close to the first film’s heights, managing only a weak $51.1 million. In a year where Pixar sat on the sidelines, many saw How to Train Your Dragon 2 as a surefire bet, but that too had its struggles. The $177 million gross is nothing to sneeze at, but the 2010 original Dragon made $217.5 million and the R-rated 22 Jump Street beat Dragon 2 during their opening weekend showdown. And we haven’t even mentioned those that came and went without much fuss (The Book of Life).
how to train your dragon 2 trailer poster 2014 Movie Box Office Review: Guardians, LEGO, & Summer Slumps
Last year showed us that the family film isn’t in any kind of danger with Frozen, Despicable Me 2, and Monsters University, so for now we’ll chalk this up to being a blip on the radar. Every once in a while, we’ll get a year without too many high-profile family flicks. Next year should see a reversal of fortunes with two Pixar offerings (Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur), a Minions spinoffs, and other titles. We’ll know for sure in 2015, but it doesn’t seem as if families’ tastes have changed dramatically; it was just an interesting development in 2014.
