As if Guardians of the Galaxy needed more marketing and positive word-of-mouth on its run to setting box office around the world, every little bit did count, including a glowing review from Al Pacino. The Oscar winning Hollywood megastar was forced to see James Gunn’s first Marvel movie thanks to his kids and loved it, from the big screen “inventive” spectacle to what he describes as the “Shakespearean feeling” it evoked.
He was immediately asked then if he would be up for joining a Marvel production to which he replied “I would do anything that I could understand in terms of how I fit in it,” continuing, “And you know, of course if I could fit in it. Anything’s possible.”
Those words earned quite a few headlines based on the idea of it alone and speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast today, Pacino revealed that he has, in fact, met with Marvel since. Specifically, he met with Marvel Studios president of production (and super producer) Kevin Feige, jokingly saying “it’s a Marvel how things happen.”
As for what they spoke about, the Godfather himself would only say, “I would imagine that either there’s something he feels is right for me and if I feel…” before being cut off by the ring of his iPhone. He joked about it being Marvel calling to shut him up but his tone was generally positive, as if their meeting was to share ideas and possibilities and that there could be a role for him.
Given the massive slate of films recently confirmed by Marvel Studios, dating all the way to 2019 where Phase 3 concludes with The Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2, there are lots of potential parts for Pacino to play. If it’s something in the more near future, it could be a role in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which he’d obviously be game for, or perhaps a supporting character/villain in Doctor Strange which just finally found itsstar in Benedict Cumberbatch (officially). Maybe Al Pacino can play Star-Lord’s (Chris Pratt) mysterious father.
This isn’t the first aging Hollywood star we’ve heard namedropped in association with Marvel recently, either. Robert Downey Jr. has for some time been trying to get Mel Gibson a gig in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and with the expansion in popularity and box office appeal of the superhero movie genre, most stars are lining up for a chance to join one of these franchises. Not to mention the recent casting announcements for DC Entertainment and Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad including Oscar winners/nominees Jared Leto and Will Smith. That’s only going to raise the stakes even more for superhero movie talent. Prepare more more higher profile stars joining DC and Marvel movies.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron releases in theaters on May 1, 2015, followed by Ant-Man on July 17, 2015, Captain America: Civil War on May 6, 2016, Doctor Strange on November 4, 2016, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 on May 5, 2017, Thor: Ragnarok on July 28, 2017, Black Panther on November 3, 2017, Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 on May 4, 2018, Captain Marvel on July 6, 2018, Inhumans on November 2, 2018 and Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2 on May 3, 2019.
