Despite a late change of hands from Edgar Wright to Peyton Reed, Marvel Studio’s superhero introduction/heist movie Ant-Man has wrapped production and is now headed into post-production to get it ready for its summer 2015 release date. Starring Paul Rudd in the lead as master thief Scott Lang and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym (the discoverer of the miraculous Pym Particles), the film will introduce Ant-Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as two generations of the superhero identity work together to fight a common enemy.
The cast also includes Evangeline Lilly as Hank’s daughter, Hope Van Dyne, and Corey Stoll as the villainous Darren Cross AKA Yellowjacket. Other cast members that have been announced are Michael Peña, Judy Greer, Bobby Cannavale and Martin Donovan, but with few plot details available beyond the official synopsis it’s been difficult to guess who each actor is playing.
Now an updated synopsis from Marvel has been posted by Stitch Kingdom, which not only reveals another cast member but also assigns character names to the previously announced actors. The role of antagonist Castillo, whom we previously guessed might be played by Peña, will actually be filled by Spanish actor Jordi Mollà, who was most recently seen in sci-fi action movie Riddick.
The synopsis itself hasn’t changed (the last update upgraded Scott Lang from con-man to master thief) but it does reveal that Ant-Man will feature Cannavale as Paxton, Peña as Luis, Greer as Maggie, Tip “T.I.” Harris as Dave, David Dastmalchian as Kurt and Wood Harris as Gale. Greer’s character is Scott Lang’s ex-wife, but none of the given character names stick out as belonging to major characters from the comics, so it’s likely that they’re original characters.
Mollà is the only new name in the cast, though obviously that doesn’t mean he’s only just been added since filming has already wrapped. According to rumors, “Castillo” is a Latin American dictator who is the MCU’s version of Fidel Castro, and will be the main villain in the portion of the movie that’s set in the 1960s. That portion of the movie will also feature Hayley Atwell back in the role of Peggy Carter, so expect to see S.H.I.E.L.D. and Hank Pym getting tangled up in some Cold War politics.
Ant-Man releases in theaters July 17th, 2015.
