Peter Jackson once again ruled the box office, but his numbers were slightly below past successes.
In at number 1 is The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (read our review) with $56.2 million. That’s the lowest opening weekend total among the three Hobbitfilms, but is still a solid debut.
It should also be mentioned that this third Hobbit film opened on Wednesday and therefore had a two-day window without much competition. In total, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies has made $90 million domestic.
Internationally, The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies continues to dominate with a 12-day total of $265 million. That’s well ahead of past Hobbit films at this point, and puts this one on pace for a potential $1 billion finish worldwide.
Night of the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (read our review) comes in at number 2 with $17.3 million. This third film in the once-solid family-friendly franchise is well below its predecessors and has a steep road toward profitability.
It could be that the appeal of the franchise has simply worn off or that Night of the Museum is waiting until Christmas to make all its money. The latter scenario seems unlikely, though, so count Night at the Museum finished for now.
The number 3 film this weekend is Annie (read our review) with $16.3 million, which is a decent opening for a movie musical. The good news is Annie has a fruitful holiday season ahead of it and should hit big with families over the next few days. It even has a chance to top $100 million by the time things are all said and done.
Coming in at number 4 is Exodus: Gods and Kings with $8 million. The biblical epic fell 66% from last weekend, a surefire sign that interest is all but gone after just one week. Strong competition in a similar space certainly didn’t help Exodus, but we’re inclined to believe poor word of mouth did the most damage.
Rounding out the top 5 is The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 with $7.7 million. The first chapter in the final Hunger Games two-parter is slowly dropping out of the top 10, but has still made $289 million. It only needs about $50 million more to overtake Guardians of the Galaxy for the title of top grossing movie (domestically) of 2014.
In at number 6 is Wild (read our review) with $4.1 million. Reese Witherspoon’s critically acclaimed biopic saw a massive bump during its week 3 expansion. The film is now up to $7 million.
Top Five comes in at number 7 with $3.57 million, which brings its current total up to $12 million. The Chris Rock-directed film did increase its theater count over the weekend, but unfortunately it still saw about a 50% drop off in grosses.
The number 8 film is Big Hero 6 with $3.56 million. Disney Animation’s latest franchise-starter is up to $190 million domestic.
Coming in at number 9 is Penguins of Madagascar with $3.52 million. TheMadagascar spinoff is now up to $64 million.
Rounding out the top 10 is P.K. with $3.4 million. Yet again, a Bollywood comedy finds a way to crack the top 10 in the last weekend before Christmas. Last year it wasDhoom 3 earning $3.4M and this year it’s P.K. doing the exact same.
