There’ve been some exciting developments this past week for Warner Bros. and DC’s upcoming slate of comic book movies, in the form of Suicide Squad official casting (including Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Will Smith as Deadshot); the Wonder Woman movie lining up a screenwriter to develop the project under director Michelle MacLaren’s guidance; and Guillermo del Toro clarifying his finished Justice League Dark film script, Dark Universe, is meant to be part of the DC Shared Universe.
Today, we can add the conclusion of production on Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice to the list. The news was revealed by the director of photography, Larry Fong, who also collaborated with director Zack Snyder on 300 and Watchmen; Fong didn’t serve as the cinematographer on Snyder’s Superman film, Man of Steel, since he was shooting Now You See Me at the time. (Amir Mokri (Transformers: Age of Extinction) was the director of photography on Snyder’s Superman movie reboot, instead.)
A change in cinematographer isn’t the only significant difference in personnel between the crew who made Man of Steel and the one working on Batman V Superman. The latter’s first script draft was penned by the Superman reboot’s scribe, David S. Goyer, but was thereafter significantly revised by Oscar-winner Chris Terrio (Argo); as the latter is reported the top choice to write the two Justice League movies that Snyder will be directing, one presumes Terrio’s Batman V Superman script work has already managed to impress somebody up high on the food chain.
Will Batman V Superman prove less divisive than Man of Steel (with its tweaked visual style and screenplay writing), and manage to both bring in more fans, while continuing to build on Snyder’s previous re-invention of the Superman cinematic mythos? That’s the question, as they say, but we’re now one step closer to finding out the answer, as teased in this video – referencing the end of production on Dawn of Justice – posted by Fong.
A Batman V Superman teaser was shown at Comic-Con in San Diego earlier this year, but now we can look forward to a full-blown theatrical trailer. That could still be a ways away, though, since the film doesn’t open in theaters until the first quarter of 2016; much like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, though, a Batman V Superman theatrical preview could launch as soon as a year ahead of its release. Alternatively, WB might decide to save the trailer for one of its big Summer 2015 releases, such as Mad Max: Fury Road or Pan.
Warner Bros.’ next big release is this month’s The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, but right now studios seem more preoccupied with building hype for their 2015 releases. Rest assured, though, that when the Batman V Superman teaser doesdrop (which one assumes would happen before the film’s presentation at Comic-Con 2015), it should be quite the event…
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice is directed by Zack Snyder, based on a script by David S. Goyer and Chris Terrio, and stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Laurence Fishburne, Jesse Eisenberg, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Holly Hunter, Ray Fisher, and possibly Jason Momoa. It opens in U.S. theaters on March 25th, 2016.
