Fans of all things Dark Knight and Man of Steel already know that a rumor buzzing around the internet claims that Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice might besplit into two films with Part 1: Enter the Knight arriving on October 23, 2015 andPart 2: Dawn of Justice on the film’s previously confirmed date in March 25, 2016.
Our only source for this was an image which appeared online and quickly spread across the interwebs like a Kryptonian virus. It seemed wildly unlikely that Warner Bros./DC Comics would pull a move like this, but then again, 2015 will be completely void of any big screen DCU entries – could there have been a shred of truth to this development? According to Superman himself, Henry Cavill: Nope.
Cavill recently attended a BAFTA party in Los Angeles, and according to Variety‘sRamin Setoodeh, (hat tip to CBM) Cavill denied the two-part rumor, among other comments on BvS.
Cavill also described Ben Affleck as a “great” Batman and responded with “You’ll see” when asked if Dawn of Justice will be better than The Avengers. As for whether or not he sustained any injuries when fighting Affleck, he said:
So does this update from one of the film’s stars finally slam the lid on the two-part rumors? In theory, yes. It has become fairly standard for big budget franchises to separate certain key entries into multiple parts (The Hobbit, Harry Potter, Twilight, The Hunger Games), with Marvel splitting their third Avengers outing into the two-part Infinity War and even Warner Bros. doing the same with their Justice League films.
Beyond the question of whether or not the studio would force the film into theaters for a 2015 opening and extra box office boost, could the film’s story support such a split? According to Badass Digest, absolutely not.
BAD claims to be familiar with at least one draft of the Dawn of Justice script, and according to Devin Faraci, the point at which the story could be split in two is the “big Batman and Superman fight” which happens halfway through, with the preceding material too thin (and not Batman-heavy enough) for a standalone film.
And then there’s the potential second film. According to Faraci:
…there’s so much action in the second half as Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman battle Doomsday in Metropolis and Gotham that you’d end up with two very, very lopsided movies. It works as an escalation in the full script, but without major additions it seems limp.
Could some “major additions” have been added since BAD took a look at the script? Of course. The mention of Doomsday is just the latest in a long line of rumors that the perennial Superman villain could appear, and we have a bit more information on another character with plenty of question marks circling around him: Ray Fisher’s Cyborg.
According to BAD:
Ray Fisher, who plays Cyborg, said he only had scenes with Ben Affleck.
Could Fisher’s part have been expanded to fit his introduction into Enter the Knight? Cyborg is thought to be “only in this movie as a cameo, and that’s at the very, very end as Batman assembles the Justice League.” If the fully-enhanced character of Cyborg shows up at the end, he’ll need to be introduced as Victor Stone at some point, and then transformed into the superhero. This is just one plot point of so, so many – how “streamlined” could the final shooting script be?
In the end, we can probably take Cavill at his word, but until we have some kind of official word from Warner Bros., those who really like the idea of a two-part film can afford to remain skeptical.
