At this point, it’s no secret that Sony is at something of a crossroads when it comes to its Spider-Man franchise. The disappointing critical and financial performance of last year’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has essentially caused the studio to re-evaluate its ambitious world-building plans for everyone’s favorite wall-crawler.
In the past week, rumors have been circulating that Spider-Man may finally appear onscreen with the Avengers, though Sony has since denied such a deal. So, for the time being, fans are left wondering where the Peter Parker’s alter-ego will pop up next and which, if any, of the many plot threads set in motion by The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will be carried into future films.
One such undeveloped plotline involved the introduction of Felicia Hardy/Black Cat to the big screen Spider-Man universe in the last film, as played by Academy Award nominee Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything). With the future of the franchise in question, Clevvver Movies caught up with Jones about whether she would even be interested in returning to the role.
Here’s what she had to say:
“Well, she’s such a great character in the comics. I mean, if that happened, that would be lovely. There are no plans, but I’d love to play her. She’s a fantastic, awesome female characters.”
Of course, Jones’ mention that there are currently “no plans” for her to return to the Spider-Man franchise isn’t exactly a surprise, though the character of Black Cat – who has alternated between villain and anti-hero in the comics – has been hinted as a potential player in Sony’s announced Sinister Six film, a decision possibly teased in the end credits of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 as well. Black Cat would also be among the top contenders for the discussed female-centered entry in the Spider-Man franchise, though there’s no indication if that film even remains in development at Sony.
With Jones’ star on the rise following her Oscar nomination, perhaps keeping her in the role would be a smart move for Sony, provided they even include Black Cat (or the existing Amazing Spider-Man continuity) in the mix at all. Only time will tell what the studio’s next move will be, but at least for now, it seems like Jones is game to suit up as the Black Cat when and if the call comes.
