It’s 2015 and with the new year comes a new set of Spider-Man movie rumors. If you haven’t been following along, The Amazing Spider-Man franchise has been the hot topic of comic book movie fans for a few months thanks to the disastrous leaks of internal Sony documents and emails from hacker attacks late last year.
The leaks revealed that Sony and Marvel were in discussions to potentially work out a deal that would alter the course of Sony’s current plans for The Amazing Spider-Man franchise after lower-than-expected box office earnings and mixed reviews of the latest series installment. In the last decade, the Spider-Man franchise went from being the biggest superhero movie brand, to the smallest out of the big four and that is simply not acceptable for Sony’s decision makers and the studio’s bottom line. As a result, the plans for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 & 4, along with spinoffs for Sinister Six and Venom have been in a state of flux, drowning in rumors of cancellations. Needless to say, the buzz is not positive for Spidey.
What began as rumors are now a reality and the Sony leak revealed that executives, producers and filmmakers involved with Spider-Man would be meeting this month, January 2015, at a “summit” to put together a plan for the iconic character. Reports confirmed that at one point, Marvel wanted to introduce their own version of Spider-Man (played by someone other than Andrew Garfield) in Captain America: Civil War in May 2016 but Sony and Marvel couldn’t come to an agreement in time to make that happen since the script is mostly done and filming begins soon.
The next best case scenario for a Spider-Man introduction in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – and most logical – would then be The Avengers 3 (Infinity War- Part 1). We’re not talking cameos here, we mean an actual legitimate role.
And that’s what Latino-Review is sharing a rumor of today. They won’t detail a source, and it could be speculation based on word-of-mouth, but their report explains that Spider-Man will indeed be returning to the Marvel family in their live-action film franchise and will have a key role in The Avengers: Infinity War- Part 1 in 2018. That particular movie, as they explain and as we’ve discussed on the site before, will feature a very different team of heroes because of events that will occur in Phase 3 of the MCU.
Comic readers and Captain America fans can piece together what’ll happen to Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) at the end of Civil War and the title for Thor 3 (subtitledRagnarok) – which screenwriter Christopher Yost and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige explain means “the end of all things” - hints that Thor may not be in a great spot at the end of that feature. Toss in the years of rumors about what’ll happen to Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) after he loses control in The Avengers: Age of Ultron and you can see why the core heroes we’ve known since Phase 1 might not be the happy family protecting Earth by the end of Phase 3. They might not be there at all…
So, if Marvel’s current flagship movie heroes all occupied elsewhere in the growing cinematic universe, and we’re meeting a large series of new heroes on Netflix (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist) and in upcoming films (Ant-Man, Wasp, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Captain Marvel) – who better to serve as a face of The Avengers than Marvel’s most popular hero of all-time: Spider-Man.
If Marvel and Sony can make it work, it’s the best thing that can happen to Spider-Man and the MCU. Spider-Man should show up in The Avengers and we’ve said that since the first movie saw his home, New York, under attack by aliens. At this point it almost needs to happen since excitement for another Amazing Spider-Man under the current regime is at an all-time low and the reality is that nothing Sony can do with the Marvel characters they own is as exciting as Spider-Man standing alongside The Avengers.
That’s why it’s very believable that Captain America 2 & 3 directors Anthony and Joe Russo (who are reportedly going to direct The Avengers 3 & 4 as well) could still produce Sony’s new Spider-Man solo movies in a partnership agreement between their own production company, Marvel and Sony, that will see each studio sharing characters. We’ll see if something along those lines happens in the very near future but if the news proves true, it’s still possible for Spider-Man to show up in Captain America: Civil War. And with Marvel launching an entire sub-franchise on Netflix all taking place in New York, there’s plenty of room for cameos and setups.
It’s all connected.
Sinister Six is currently scheduled for November 11, 2016.
The Avengers: Age of Ultron releases in theaters on May 1 2015, followed by Ant-Man on July 17 2015, Captain America: Civil War on May 6 2016, Doctor Strange on November 4 2016, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 on May 5 2017, Thor: Ragnarok on July 28, 2017, Black Panther on November 3 2017, Avengers: Infinity War – Part 1 on May 4 2018, Captain Marvel on July 6 2018, Inhumans on November 2 2018 and Avengers: Infinity War – Part 2 on May 3 2019.
