As the time until Bryan Singer will begin filming X-Men: Apocalypse grows ever closer, rumors about which stars will be cast as the younger versions of Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm have been heating up. The first batch of potential casting choiceswas revealed late last year and included Elle Fanning, Chloe Grace Moretz and Hailee Steinfeld for Jean Grey, and Charlie Rowe, Timothee Chalamet and Ben Hardy for Cyclops.
X-Men: Apocalypse is set in the eighties and will see Professor X and his youthful band of X-Men facing off against an ancient mutant called Apocalypse, who was teased in the post-credits scene for X-Men: Days of Future Past. The Apocalypse of the comic books was hugely powerful, meaning it might take the combined efforts of the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Mutants to stop him (assuming Magneto is even interested in stopping him).
Now Latino Review is claiming to have the inside scoop on the next group of actors being tested for the roles of Cyclops, Storm and Jean Grey. For the latter mutant,Game of Thrones‘ Sophie Turner and Hanna star Saoirse Ronan. The actors said to be in the running for Cyclops are Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Jamie Blackley (If I Stay) and Tye Sheridan (Mud).
The actresses named for the role of Storm are slightly less well-known: Alexandra Shipp, who recently played the lead role in TV biopic Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, and Zendaya Coleman, one of the two leads in the Disney Channel’s Shake It Up and will soon star in another Disney Channel series, K.C. Undercover.
There are plenty of good choices in the mix, and it’s particularly difficult to decide whether Turner or Ronan would be best for Jean Grey. Kingsman: The Secret Servicehas already received a swathe of very positive reviews and will probably receive quite a few more when it releases next month – which could very well increase Egerton’s profile and help his chances of being cast as Cyclops.
X-Men: Apocalypse will begin filming by this summer (if not sooner), so expect to hear more concrete casting news soon. In the meantime, let us know in the comments which of these actors would be your picks for the young X-Men.
X-Men: Apocalypse will be in theaters May 27, 2016.
