There is no shortage of expectations attached to next year’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice from director Zack Snyder. The film will officially launch Warner Bros.’ DC cinematic universe, which is already planned out through 2020. It seems everyone involved with Batman v Superman has teased one aspect of the film or another from the action sequences to the appearance of other superheroes and the character dynamics of those set to appear.
Henry Cavill, who will be reprising his role as Clark Kent a.k.a. Superman, added his own teasing comments to the mix. The actor offered own take on the scale of Batman v Superman as well as what he hopes fans will think of the final film.
In an interview with Daily Mail Online at the BAFTA LA party, Cavill talked about being entrenched in filming Batman V Superman up until last month and missing many movies from the past year. When asked what fans can expect, the actor saidBatman v Superman will be “cinematic history” and Snyder won’t disappoint those who have come to recognize the director’s filming style.
Read Cavill’s full quote:
“It’s Zack Snyder so it’s going to be a visual spectacle and it’s cinematic history. We’re doing Batman and we’re doing Superman and it’s all happening at the same time so fingers crossed it turns out to be as exciting as I think it is.”
Cavill is right that Batman v Superman will make cinematic history if only for the fact that the two titular superheroes have never appeared onscreen together in a live-action feature film. Whether it will make history in other aspects – like box office performance – remains to be seen.
Marvel’s The Avengers proved that success can be found in films featuring multiple superheroes both in terms of critical response and ticket sales, so Batman v Supermanis not the first superhero film in recent years to feature a team-up of established characters. But, it will combine the forces of Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. These particular heroes are some of the most iconic and have long-standing histories in film and on television, possibly making their team-up more high profile and historic.
Of course, given how well-known Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman are to even the casual movie fan, that adds more expectation to Batman v Superman. The film currently has a lot to live up to between its characters’ histories, comparisons to Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, and its role in launching the DC cinematic universe. Perhaps “cinematic history” won’t even be enough for Batman v Superman to meet expectations.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice will premiere March 25th, 2016.
