As far as we know, Anthony Mackie won’t be appearing in this summer’s Avengers: Age of Ultron as Falcon. However, the character will, in fact, be showing up in the epic-sounding Captain America: Civil War next year, and the future is rife with possibilities for him to return.
That film is set to feature a full roster of Avengers alumni, with both Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson appearing alongside new addition Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther. Exactly how Mackie will fit into that film is anyone’s guess (though it’s pretty clear he’ll likely be siding with Cap).
During a recent appearance on WTTG Fox 5, Mackie himself has spoken up about the experience working on the film and what fans can expect. Here’s what he had to say:
“It’s so amazing to be a part of the Marvel universe. It’s so rare that you go into a movie, and you know the movie is gonna be good. And Marvel does not settle for mediocre on any of their movies. And that is what’s so great. You can go as far as you want because you know they are going to make it look good.”
Mackie recently hinted at the upgraded new suit Falcon will be sporting in Civil War; and given the consistent performance of Marvel Studios releases, it’s difficult to argue with his comments about the company’s reputation. It’s also not hard to imagine the actor remaining a major player in future films, seeing as he has admitted to signing a multi-film contract with Marvel.
Smart money says that Falcon will play a big part in Avengers: Infinity War, though nothing official has been announced to that effect. In the meantime, however, it sounds like Mackie is fine with being a team player.
“My thing is, I’ve done one of these movies. I love working with Chris [Evans]. He’s one of my closest friends. So, as long as it’s me and Chris playing Falcon and Cap, I’m all cool with being Falcon.”
Judging by Mackie’s comments, it sounds like the friendship between he and Evans nicely mirrors the bond that their characters share in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Considering fan response to Falcon, it’s likely that Marvel will want to hang on to the character (and his portrayer) for quite some time. So it’s encouraging to hear that Mackie is just as thrilled to be involved in these films as fans are to see what his character does next.
Captain America: Civil War opens in theaters on May 6, 2016.
