Brad Pitt’s production company, Plan B Entertainment, has recently seen great success, with last year’s 12 Years a Slave taking home Best Picture at the Academy Awards and now Selma on track to potentially do the same.
Previously, the company’s most lauded film had been the 2011 film Moneyball, based on the novel of the same name by Michael Lewis about a general manager struggling to build a competitive baseball team. The film earned six Oscar nominations yet sadly no wins, but that hasn’t detered Pitt and Plan B from again looking to adapt Lewis’ work.
Variety is reporting that next from Plan B is an adaptation of Lewis’ novel The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine, a non-fiction novel discussing the buildup of the housing and credit bubble in the early 2000s. The film – simply titled The Big Short - will follow several key figures responsible for creating the credit bubble, who then profited from the resulting financial crisis.
Adam McKay, one-time possible Ant-Man director, now credited as screenwriter alongside Paul Rudd, will write and direct The Big Short for Plan B. Pitt will star – along with Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling – as well as produce with Plan B’s co-president, DeDe Gardner. Currently, there is no set start date for production.
Bringing together a powerhouse trio like Pitt, Bale, and Gosling suggests The Big Short offers meaty roles for the highly sought after actors, roles that could very well earn them accolades and awards. And judging by the subject matter and the high profile cast, Plan B is definitely considering The Big Short as an award season contender.
Which makes it all the more surprising that McKay – a writer/director best known for Will Ferrell vehicles like Anchorman and Step Brothers – would be their choice for a serious and critical film like The Big Short. However, Variety adds that Pitt is “very passionate” about this project, implying the choice of McKay wasn’t made halfheartedly. Clearly, Plan B must consider McKay the right man for the job.
