‘X-Men: Apocalypse’: Taron Egerton Responds to Cyclops Casting Rumor

X Men: Apocalypse: Taron Egerton Responds to Cyclops Casting Rumor
X-Men: Apocalypse, the latest installment in the long-running superhero franchise, is due to begin production this April in Montreal, and so casting on the highly-anticipated sequel to Days of Future Past should be nearing completion. Lead villain Apocalypse has already been cast, with Oscar Isaac landing the coveted role after wrapping up his part in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens. Yet the search is apparently still on for a young Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm.
Two months ago a number of young stars were rumored to be up for the lead roles of Scott Summers and Jean Grey, but it seems casting has narrowed down since then as this week a new batch of actors and actresses reportedly started testing for the parts. Now rumored to be in the running for Scott Summers a.k.a. Cyclops are Jamie Blackley (If I Stay), Tye Sheridan (Mud) and Welsh actor Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service).
In a stroke of luck, Egerton just so happened to be attending a special screening and Q&A of his film Kingsman: The Secret Service hours after the news broke. When asked about the rumor, Egerton reportedly responded“I really can’t comment on the Cyclops thing,” before assuring the audience that his next film is Eddie The Eagle with Hugh Jackman. So it would seem while there may be something to comment on, the timing might suggest he’s no longer up for the role.
Egerton went on to say:
“I’m not really sure what’s going on there or where that [rumor] came from, but my friend Nicholas Hoult plays Beast and he says that’s very fun. Of course, everyone would like to play a superhero, but this is by no means me saying I would like to go play Cyclops. So, I don’t know.”

Egerton’s denial of the casting rumor, along with a tweet from The Wrap‘s Jeff Sneider that Sheridan is currently the frontrunner for Cyclops, give credence to the idea that casting is close to finished and he won’t be Cyclops. On the one hand, the casting rumor could be completely false as Egerton seems to imply, but it’s more likely that the actor was at one time up for the role and has since moved on.
What do you make of Egerton’s response. Do you think he’s still up for the part of Cyclops or would you rather see Sheridan fill the ruby-quartz visor? Let us know in the comments.
